Q

Describe what a NOTAM is and what types exist.

A

NOTAM - time critical aeronautical information either temporary in nature or not sufficiently known in advance to permit publication on aeronautical charts or in other operational publications. The info receives immediate dissemination via the NOTAM system. NOTAMs contain current notices to airmen considered essential to the safety of flight, as well as supplemental data affecting other operation publications. NOTAMs are available from FSS, DUATS (direct user access terminal service), private vendors, many online websites.

BIRDTAM - notice of passing fock of birds

SNOWTAM - rwy/taxi/apron status w/respect to snow, ice, and standing water.

ASHTAM - operationally significant change in volcanic ash or other dust contamination

NOTAMs - 4 categories

  1. NOTAM (D) or NOTAMs that receive distant dissemination. Information disseminated for all nav facilities that are part of the NAS, and all public use airports, seaplane bases, and heliports listed in the Chart Supplement U.S. (formerly known as airport flight directory). All D NOTAMs are required to have one of the following at the beginning of the text: RWY, TWY, RAMP, APRON, AD, OBST, NAV, COM, SVC, AIRSPACE, (U), or (O)
  2. Distant and Flight Data Center (FDC) NOTAMs. Issued by the national flight data center. Contain info regulatory in nature pertaining to flight including but not limited to changes to charts, procedures, and airspace usage. Includes interim IFR flight procedures & temporary flight restrictions.
  3. Pointer NOTAMs
