FA - structure and function of skeleton Flashcards
Name 6 functions of the Skeleton
Support
Protection
Movement
Production of blood cells
Storage of Minerals
Endocrine regulation
What is the main trunk of the skeleton called
The Axial Skeleton
What is the appendicular skeleton
The extremities
Name the 3 sections of the Axial Skeleton
Cranium
Vertebral Column
Thoracic cage
What is the function of the cranium
To protect brain
Provides framework for teeth and sensory structures
How many bones are in the cranium
22 bones including 8 cranial bones and 8 facial bones
Describe the Vertebral Column
It goes from skull to pelvis, it is made up of individual vertebrae, it helps maintain posture and protects the spinal cord
How many vertebrae are in the Vertebral Column
7 cervical
12 thoracic
5 lumbar
5 sacrum
3-5 coccyx
Describe the thoracic cage
Ribs attach to the sternum, protects vital organs
How many bones are in the thoracic cage
There are 37 bones:
12 pairs of ribs
1 sternum
12 thoracic vertebrae
What are ribs 1-7 called
True - because the attach to the sternum via theirs own separate cartilage
What are ribs 8-12 called
False - they are not attached via their own separate cartilage
Why are ribs 11-12 called floating ribs
Because they are not fixed anteriorly, only posterially
Name the Sections of the Appendicular Skeleton
Shoulder Girdle
Arms
hands
Carpal bones
Pelvic girdle
Legs
Feet
Name the bones in the shoulder girdle
Clavicle
Scapula
