Chemical germicides formulated for use on skin; registered and regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
Antiseptics
Showing no signs or symptoms of infection
Asymptomatic
Single celled microorganisms that have both plant and animal characteristics. Some are harmful and others are harmless
bacteria

bacterial spores
capable of destroying bacteria
bactericidal
colonies of microorganisms that adhere to environmental surfaces, as well as the human body
biofilms
disease causing microorganisms carried in the body by blood or bodily fluid such as hepatitis or HIV
blood borne pathogens
break down stubborn films and remove the residue of products such as salts, scrubs, and masks; AKA chelating detergents.
chelating soaps
mechanical process using soap and water or detergent and water to remove all visible dirt, debris, and many disease-causing germs. Cleaning also removes invisible debris that interferes with disinfection; cleaning is what beauty professionals are required to do before disinfecting
cleaning
able to be communicated; transferable by contact from one person to another
communicable
AKA communicable disease; disease that is capable of being spread from one person to another
contagious disease
the presence, or the reasonably anticipated presence of blood or other potentially infectious material on an items surface, or visible debris or residues such as dust, skin, or hair
contamination
the removal of blood or other potentially infectious materials on an item’s surface and the removal of visible debris or residues such as dust, skin, or hair
decontamination
determination of the nature of a disease from its symptoms and/or diagnostic tests; federal regulations prohibit salon professionals from forming this.
diagnosis
transmission of pathogens through touching (including shaking hands), kissing, coughing, sneezing, and talking
direct transmission
A disease that breaks down the body’s immune system; caused by HIV
AIDS
An abnormal condition of all or part of the body, or its systems or organs, that makes the body incapable of carrying on normal function.
What is a disease?
Chemical products approved by the EPA, designed to destroy most bacteria (excluding spores), fungi, and viruses on surfaces.
What are disinfectants?
A chemical process that uses specific products to destroy harmful organisms (except bacterial spores) on environmental surfaces.
Define disinfection.
The ability of a product to produce the intended effect; indicates specific pathogens destroyed or disabled when used properly.
efficacy
Contact with non intact broken skin, blood, bodily fluid, or other potentially infectious materials, resulting from the performance of an employee’s duties.
exposure incident
Single celled organisms that grow in irregular masses and include molds, mildews, and yeasts; can produce contagious diseases such as ringworm.
fungi
Capable of destroying molds and fungi.
fungicidal
A blood borne virus that causes disease and can damage the liver.
What is hepatitis?
An inflammatory disease of the skin caused by a viral infection characterized by small vesicles in clusters.
What is the Herpes Simplex Virus?
Human immunodeficiency virus.
What does HIV stand for?
A virus that can infect the bottom of the foot and resembles small black dots; also a cutaneous viral infection commonly contracted through sexual transmission and exhibited by genital warts.
What is the Human Papillomavirus (HPV)?
Transmission of blood or bodily fluids through contact with an intermediate contaminated object such as a razor, extractor, nipper, or an environmental surface.
Define indirect transmission.
The invasion of body tissues by disease causing pathogens.
What is an infection?
The methods used to eliminate or reduce the transmission of infectious organisms from one individual to another.
What is infection control?
Caused by or capable of being transmitted by infection.
What does infectious mean?
Disease caused by pathogenic (harmful) microorganisms that enter the body; may or may not be spread from one person to another.
What is an infectious disease?
A condition where the body reacts to injury, irritation, or infection, characterized by redness, heat, pain, and swelling.
What is inflammation?
An infection such as a pimple or abscess, confined to a particular part of the body and appears as a lesion containing pus.
What is a local infection?
A type of infectious bacteria that is highly resistant to conventional treatments such as antibiotics.
What is Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)?
Any organism of microscopic or submicroscopic size.
What is a microorganism?
A type of fungus that affects plants or grows on inanimate objects but does not cause human infection.
What is mildew?
Items that can be cleaned, disinfected, and used on more than one person, even if exposed to blood or bodily fluids.
What does multiuse mean?
A large family of bacteria that is often found in soil and water
includes species that can be pathogenic and nonpathogenic.
What is Mycobacterium?
Harmless microorganisms that may perform useful functions and are safe to come in contact with since they do not cause disease or harm
can contribute to beneficial processes in ecosystems.
nonpathogenic
An item made of a material that has no pores or openings and cannot absorb liquids
nonporous
Illness resulting from conditions associated with employment such as prolonged and repeated overexposure to certain products or ingredients
What is an occupational disease?
Organisms that grow, shelter on or inside another organism (the host) while contributing nothing to the survival of that organism
What are parasites?
Disease caused by parasites such as lice and mites
Define parasitic disease.
Harmful microorganisms that can cause disease or infection when they invade the body
organisms include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.
What does pathogenic mean?
Disease produced by organisms including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites
What is a pathogenic disease?
Infestation of the hair and scalp with head lice
What is pediculosis capitis?
Tuberculocidal disinfectants that are a form of formaldehyde, have a very high pH, and can damage the skin and eyes
What are phenolic disinfectants?
Made or constructed of a material that has pores or openings; porous items are absorbent
Define porous.
A fluid created by infection
What is pus?
Products made of quaternary ammonium cations designed for disinfection of nonporous surfaces
What are quaternary ammonium compounds?
A fungal infection of the skin that appears in circular lesions
What is ringworm?
A chemical process for reducing the number of disease-causing germs on a cleaned surface to a safe level
Define sanitation.
A contagious skin disease caused by the itch mite, which burrows under the skin
What is scabies?
Common household bleach; an effective disinfectant for the salon, spa, and barbershop
Sodium hypochlorite is widely used for its antimicrobial properties.
What is sodium hypochlorite?
Guidelines published by the CDC that require the employer and employee to assume that any human blood and bodily fluids are potentially infectious
What are standard precautions?
Pus forming bacteria that grow in clusters like a bunch of grapes; cause abscesses, pustules, and boils
What is Staphylococcus?
The process that completely destroys all microbial life including spores
is critical in medical and laboratory settings.
Define sterilization.
An infection where the pathogen has distributed throughout the body rather than staying in one area or organ
What is a systemic infection?
Also known as barber’s itch; a superficial fungal infection that commonly affects the skin
primarily affects the bearded areas of the face and neck.
What is tinea barbae?
A fungal infection of the scalp characterized by red papules at the opening of the hair follicles
can lead to hair loss and requires antifungal treatment.
What is tinea capitis?
often referred to as phenolics are proven to kill the bacterium that causes tuberculosis, in addition to other pathogens destroyed through the use of hospital disinfectants
Tuberculocidal disinfectants:
a disease caused by bacteria that are transmitted through coughing or sneezing
Tuberculosis:
Capable of destroying viruses
virucidal
a parasitic submicroscopic particle that infects and resides in cells of biological organisms. A virus is capable of replication only through taking over the cell of the host
