F10 Design Science Research Flashcards
What is DSR (Design Science Research)?
Method to design/creation and evaluation of an artifact
What are the six activities DSRM is based on?
(1) Problem definition/motivation
(2) Definition of objectives of solution
(3) Design & Development
(4) Demonstration
(5) Evaluation
(6) Communication
What is the purpose of the first objective? “Problem Identification and Motivation”
- Define research problem / artifacts to be addressed (essentially literature review)
- Essentially research gap
What is the purposes of the second objective? “Definition of the Objectives for a Solution”
- Derive objectives for a solution (often includes formulating RQ)
- Objectives can be both quantitative (measured data) or qualitative (new insights)
What is the purposes of the third objective? “Design and Development”
Design & create artifacts based on desired functionality (constructs, models, methods, instantiations)
What are the four main types of artifacts?
(1) constructs
(2) models
(3) methods
(4) instantiations
What is the purposes of the fourth objective? “Demonstration”
Demonstrate use of artifact to solve one/multiple instances of the problem
eg. experiment, case study
What is the purposes of the fifth objective? “Evaluation”
Evaluate to the artifact according to predefined evaluation criteria (from step 2)
What the predefined evaluation criteria be?
- Accuracy
- Performance
- Functionality
- Usability
- Consistency
- Accessibility
What are examples of qualitative evaluation?
- Satisfaction surveys
- Client feedback based on interviews or questionnaires
What are examples of quantitative evaluation?
- Measure system performance
- Measure accuracy
What is the purposes of the sixth objective? “Communication”
Communicating the problem, writing paper/thesis
What are the three cycles of DSR?
(1) Relevance cycle
(2) Rigor cycle
(3) Design cycle
What is “Relevance cycle” and what step does it include?
Step 1-2, improve motivation and goals
What is “Rigor cycle” and what step does it include?
2-3, add knowledge and scope of innovation
