Q

how do you perform the weber test?

A

Strike the tuning fork and place the tuning fork on the forehead/or top of head. Ask the patient if they can hear the tuning fork sound equally in both ears or if it is heard louder in one ear than the other. Lateralization should be equal

In sensorineural hearing loss, the sound will lateralize to the unaffected ear, which means the tone will be heard louder in the good ear. (SU-sensorineural unaffected)

In conductive hearing loss, the sound will lateralize to the affected ear which means the tone will be heard better in the one having the hearing loss. (think CA-conductive affected ear)

Q

how do you perform the rinne test?

A

Strike the tuning fork, and place the tuning fork on the mastoid bone behind the ear. Ask when the patient can no longer hear the sound, then move the tuning fork 1-2 cm away from the ear and ask again when they can no longer hear it.

In a positive rinne test: Air conduction is twice as long as bone conduction in a normal test.

In a negative rinne test: bone conduction is heard greater than air conduction.
