Extras L Flashcards
Larva, Larvae
An immature stage in the life
cycle of an animal such as an insect. The larvae
of many animals look very different from the
adults. For instance, the corn borer is a pest of
maize. The adult corn borer is a moth. The corn
borer larva is a caterpillar which lives inside a
maize stem. Similarly, the larva of the blowfly is
a maggot which lives on the decomposing flesh
of dead animals.
Leydig cell
A cell found in the testis of a
mammal, which secretes testosterone.
Testosterone is a male sex hormone.
Linkage analysis
A technique that follows the
inheritance of DNA markers in affected families
and is used to find where on our chromosomes
certain alleles responsible for diseases are
located.
Lipase
An enzyme that breaks down
triglycerides into glycerol and fatty acids. This
reaction is an example of hydrolysis since it
involves the addition of water. Lipases are found
in the digestive system and in seeds. In a
germinating seed they break down stored
triglycerides for use in respiration and for
making new cell membranes
Liposome
A small sphere made out of a double
layer of phospholipid molecules. Liposomes
have been used in gene therapy. Copies of the
normal allele for the CFTR protein, lacking in
people with cystic fibrosis, have been
introduced into the lung cells of cystic fibrosis
patients with the help of liposomes
Lumen
The space inside a hollow organ such as
the gut or a blood vessel.
Lymph
Fluid found in the lymphatic system.
Tissue fluid is formed from the blood plasma
passing through capillary walls. Most of this
tissue fluid is reabsorbed into the blood further
along the capillary network. The excess drains
into the lymphatic system and is returned by
lymph vessels to the blood.
