5.3 Is the climate changing? Flashcards
Anaerobe, Anaerobic, Anaerobically
Anaerobic
means the absence of oxygen. Anaerobic
bacteria are bacteria which only live and
multiply in the absence of oxygen. Anaerobic
respiration is respiration which takes place in
the absence of oxygen. In most animals, it
results in the formation of lactate. In plants and
microorganisms such as yeast, ethanol and
carbon dioxide are produced. Anaerobes are
organisms that respire without using oxygen.
Peat bog
Peat is an accumulation of partially decayed organic matter, mainly the remains of dead plants.
Pollen grain
A tiny structure produced by the
male parts of a flower. A mature pollen grain has
a tough outer coat and contains two male
gametes. When a pollen grain lands on the
stigma of a flower, it starts to grow and produce
a pollen tube. This pollen tube grows down
through the style towards the ovary. Eventually
the male gametes will pass down this tube into
the embryo sac and fertilisation will take place.
Dendrochronology
Determination of the age of a
piece of wood through the counting of its tree
rings.
