Extraction Of Metals/ Reactivity Series Flashcards

1
Q

How is copper extracted from phytomining-

A

Grow plants on lands containing copper ores
Burn these plants to receive the ashes
Dissolve the ash in sulphuric acid to produce a solution of a copper compound.
Then you treat the ash which contains sulphuric acid with copper to produce copper sulphate.
Scrap iron will be used to displace the copper sulfate solution by displacement reaction.

Q

How can metals be extracted from carbon- how can iron be extracted?

A

Metals that are less reactive than carbon can be extracted from their oxides by reduction with carbon.
Iron oxide can be reduced in the blast furnace to make iron

Q

Phytomining has not been widely used to extract copper, why?

A

PM takes a long time, and lands are not available

Q

Do all transition metals for 2+ ions? Why?

A

Yes mostly, because some need to lose 2 electrons so they would have a positive ion

Q

F2 + NaCl —> —— + —— fill in the blank

A

Flourine is more reactive then chlorine, so displacement reaction takes place since a more reactive metal can displace a less reactive metal.

Q

Explain bioleaching- 3 marker

A

Bioleaching uses bacteria to extract copper/metal from low grade copper/metal ores. Since the bacteria will be grown on the low grade ores.

Bioleaching also uses bacteria to produce leachate solutions (solution that contains copper/ metal ions.) so then copper/ desired metal can be extracted.

Q

What is the difference between high grade copper ores and low grade copper ores? Which ore is more scarce?

A

High grade copper ores contain a higher percentage of copper, however it is becoming more scarce so LGCO are more used nowadays.

Q

Why is mining less common and not used as a way of extracting metal?

A

Expensive/ requires a lot of costly equipment.
Mining affects habitat of living organisms, leading to habitat destruction.
Affects wild life.

Q

Plan a method to produce pure, dry crystals of copper sulfate from an insoluble metal oxide and a dilute acid-

A

I would use copper oxide and sulfuric acid
Add a measured volume of sulfuric acid to a beaker.
I would then add copper oxide and stir the solution.
Then add copper oxide until it is in excess.
Filter the solution containing copper oxide by using filter paper and a funnel, to remove the excess copper oxide.
Heat the solution until crystallization point.
Leave the solution to crystallize
Pat the crystals dry gently with a filter paper

Q

Plan a method to produce pure, dry crystals of silver chloride from an insoluble metal and a dilute acid-

A

Since we wanna create the crystals of silver chloride then we need to use silver and chloride which is hydrochloric acid.

Insoluble metal oxide- silver oxide
Dilute acid- hydrochloric acid
