Extracting Metals Flashcards
What is oxidation?
The addition of oxygen to an equation
What is reduction?
When oxygen is reduced or removed in a reaction
What is more reactive:
- Potassium or Sodium
- Calcium or Zinc
- Gold or silver
- carbon or hydrogen
- potassium
- calcium
- silver
- carbon
How do you test for reactive metals?
Burning splint test
What happens in displacement reactions?
More reactive elements react to take the place of less reactive elements
Types of extraction of metals?
Ores:mined in to earth and metals can be extracted from the ground.
Electrolysis:metals higher than carbon in reactivity are extracted by electrolysis
Reduction using carbon:metals below carbon in reactivity series extracted by reduction using carbon.
Bioleaching:uses bacteria to separate metals from their ores.
Phytoextraction:growing plants in soil that contains metal compounds
Compare electrolysis with reduction of carbon?
Electrolysis more expensive
Importance of recycling?
Conserves resources and energy
Protects environment
Beneficial for economy as metal is expensive and and recycling means metals can be reused
What are the 4 stages in the life cycle assessment?
- choice of material-metals have to be mined or extracted and raw material comes from crude oil
- manufacture-uses lots of energy causes air pollution
- product use-paint gives of toxic fumes and burning fuels release green house gases
- disposal-product disposed to landfill sites this takes space and can pollute land and water
