Electrolysis Flashcards
Define the terms: Electrolysis Cations Anions Electrolyte
Electrolysis: break down of an electrolyte using electricity
Electrolyte:the liquid being used in electrolysis
Cation:positive ion attracted to the cathode
Anion:negative ion attracted to the anode
Define
Cathode
Anode
Cathode:negative electrode
Anode:positive electrode
What does PANIC stand for?
P ositive a node N egative I s C athode
What are the charges on cations and anions
Cations:positive
Anion:negative
How do cations and anions form?
Cations form when atoms lose electrons so they have more protons than electrons
Anions form when an atom gains electrons and so they have more electrons than protons
What does OIL RIG stand for?
Oxidation Is Loss of electrons Reduction Is Gain of electrons
Why don’t simple covalent molecules conduct electricity?
Don’t contain free electrons or ions
Why don’t solid ionic compounds conduct electricity?
The ions or electrons are in fixed place so they can’t move
In what forms can ionic compounds conduct electricity?why?
When molten:electrons are able to move freely and so carry current
When dissolved in water:ions are separate and are free to move in solution and so can carry a current
