Extracellular matrix, endosymbiont theory, mitochondria & ATP Flashcards
Extracellular matrix (ECM)
A large, organized network of proteins and other molecules that surround, support and give structure to cells and tissues.
Cell wall
Plants:
- Composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin, and proteins
- Provides structural support to the cell and whole organism
- Protect cell from damages and attacks
Mitochondria
They are membrane-bound cell organelles that:
- Provide animal and plant cells with energy in the presence of oxygen through ATP synthesis
- Play an important role in Apoptosis (cell death)
The Endosymbiont Theory
Origin of the Eukaryotic Cells
Suggests mitochondria and chloroplasts are derived from ancestral bacteria
Mitochondria (structure)
Have membranes and compartments that carry out oxidative phosphorylation to provide energy for the cell (ATP)
Membranes
1. OMM (Outer Mitochondrial Membrane)
2. IMM (Inner Mitochondrial Membrane)
Aqueous compartments
1. Intermembrane space
2. Matrix
