Endoplasmic reticulum, cotranslational import, vesicle transport Flashcards
Vesicular Transport
Transport of material between compartments, between:
- organelle to plasma membrane (vice versa)
- organelle to organelle
Transport vesicle
Small, spherical, membrane-enclosed organelles that help move materials from one part of a cell to another.
They bud of a donor compartment and fuse with an acceptor compartment
Targeted movement (directed)
Movement of vesicles - Uses cytoplasm and motor proteins
Examples of vesicular transport
Exocytosis:
Endocytosis

Plasma membrane to organelle
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
A large dynamic structure that serves many roles in the cell including calcium storage, protein synthesis, and lipid metabolism
Smooth ER (function)
Functions:
- Lipid synthesis
- Production of steroids
- Detoxification
- Storage of calcium
Rough ER (function)
Functions:
- Synthesis of membrane phospholipids
- Glycosylation of proteins (addition of carb chains to specific proteins)
- Protein folding - quality control
- Protein synthesis, modification, and transport
