Extracellular matrix Flashcards
Outside the cell is an extensive 3D network of
Macromolecules
The most significant enzymes in the Extracellular matrix
Matrix metalloproteinases. These are extracellular remodeling enzymes and help the highly dynamic structural network undergo continuous remodeling.
The 2 main classes of macromolecules outside of the cell
- Fibrous proteins.
2. Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs)
The two main categories of fibrous proteins and examples
- Structural (collage and elastin)
2. Adhesive (fibronectin and laminin)
Most GAGs are linked to a specific core protein, forming ____
proteoglycans (another example of GAGs)
What do GAGs form in the extracellular matrix? and how does it get to the extracellular matrix?
Hydrated gel is synthesized intracellular and secreted outside the cell via exocytosis.
Functions of the matrix
- provide cells with structural support
- anchor cells in place
- bind cells together, forming tissues
- regulates a number of cellular functions (adhesion, growth, migration, and differentiation)
