Extra Perception Exam Flashcards
This theory examines how outside influences affect our perception.
Signal Detection Theory
The idea that our senses have limits.
Threshold
The smallest amount that you can just sense something.
Absolute Threshold
The smallest amount of change needed in a stimulus before we notice the change.
Difference threshold
Our eyes are like mirrors, reflecting information to the back of our retinas
Visual constancy
Objects viewed from different angles will produce different shapes, but we know the object’s shape remains constant.
Shape constancy
We perceive objects as having a constant color despite light reflecting on object changes
Brightness Constancy
One of the most studied concepts of perception. E.J. Gibson’s Visual Cliff Experiment (on babies)
Depth Cues
Observation & interpretation of things in terms of depth & motion
Amodal Perception
The way visual senses, denoting the eyes, observe hues & contextualize environment
Color perception
Include those that interpret verbal output. Aside from understanding one another, it helps deducing meaning from mere sound.
Speech perception
The visual ability to judge relative distance of object & spatial relationship of objects at different distances.
Depth Perception
A communication scholar who said that “Nothing is clear in and of itself but in some context for some person.”
Robert L. Scott
