External and Internal senses Flashcards
What are the senses used for
- To gather data
- To provide sense knowledge
- The first stage of the human knowing process
How does the human knowing process occur
The environment provides stimuli to the external senses. The external senses provide data to the internal senses.
The internal senses provide an image to the human intellect.
What are the two types of senses the body has and what do they contain ?
External Senses
Internal Senses -
What are the 5 external senses
ears, eyes , tongue , nose, skin/ flesh
Show the biological operation of the senses
Object > Physical Stimuli | | Organ > Receptors | | Nervous > Brain System
Show the philosophical perspective of the operation of the senses
Sensible form of the object | Sense organ | Immaterial quasi-spiritual alternation of the object.
What is the need for internal senses ?
Bringing data together to facilitate knowledge.
What are the internal senses ?
- Perception/ common sense
- Imagination
- Cogitative
- Memory
Show the flow/activity of the internal senses
Data from external senses > perception > imagination > cogitative > Memory
What is perception?
This is the sense that attributes the sensations to a specific object.
How does perception attribute sensations to a specific object
By unifying sensations received from external senses.
What is imagination ?
This is the sense that receives the perception and develops the image of the external object from the data.
What are the two types of imagination
- Retentive imagination
2. Creative imagination
What is retentive imagination
It retains/keeps the images it develops.
What is creative imagination
Puts together retained images to create new images
