Exploring Respiration in Sport 1.14 Flashcards
What happens when you exercise steadily?
You gain enough oxygen to carry out aerobic respiration.
What is anaerobic respiration?
Respiration without using oxygen.
What happens while you are carrying out anaerobic respiration?
Energetic bursts the energy needed outweighs the oxygen that you can take in and you have to respire without oxygen.
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose ➡️ lactic acid (+energy)
Which type of respiration releases the most energy? Aerobic or anaerobic?
Aerobic respiration.
What happens to the lactic acid during anaerobic respiration?
It builds up in muscles.
What is lactic acid?
Substance produced in anaerobic respiration; build up in muscles during vigorous exercise and causes an aching or burning feeling in the muscles.
How do you get rid of lactic acid?
By using the oxygen that you breathe in.
What is the oxygen debt?
Oxygen needed to break down lactic acid produced as a result of vigorous exercise.
What are the different ways of how animals store energy?
As glycogen in muscles
As glycogen in the liver
In fat reserves
What is glycogen?
Glucose molecules linked in a long chain; does not dissolve in water so can be stored in the body, especially in the liver.
