Acids and Alkalis Flashcards
Acid
A substance that has a pH of lower than 7.
Corrosive
A substance which reacts with materials and makes them dissolve.
Irritant
Something that reddens the skin
Hydrogen
The atom present in all acids
Alkali
A soluble base that has a pH higher than 7.
Soapy
The effect produced when an alkali is added to water
Hydroxide
The particle present in alkalis
Indicator
A dye that can change colour when placed in environments with different pH values
Litmus
An indicator which tells us if something is an acid or an alkali
Neutral
When a substance is neither acidic nor alkaline
Strong acid / alkali
Contains a lot of hydrogen ions / particles (acid) or a lot of hydroxide ions / particles (alkali)
Weak acid / alkali
Contains only a few hydrogen particles / ions (acid) or a lot of hydroxides particles / ions (alkali)
Universal indicator
A mixture of dyes which create a range of colour depending on the strength of acidity or alkalinity being tested
pH number
The scale from 1-14 which shows acidity or alkalinity
Neutralisation
When an acid or alkali combine resulting in products with pH 7.
Titration
A laboratory method allowing accurate volumes of liquids to be measured
Water
A molecule of water contains 2 hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom
Salt
A substance formed when an acid reacts with a base.
Equation
A way of summarising a chemical reaction with the reactants on the left of the arrow and the products on the right
Base
Something which neutralises an acid.
