Explanations of attachment Flashcards
A01: Learning theory
Explains we are all born as blank slate
A01: Classical conditioning
First investigated by Pavlov. UCS - UCR NS - NR NS - UCR CS - CR
A01: Operant conditioning
First invented by skinner. When a behaviour is maintained either through positive or negative reinforcement
A03: Learning theory is based on animal studies
Not all human behaviour can be explained by conditioning, especially complex behaviours like attachment. Non - Behaviourists argue that attachment could be caused by genetic predispositions or mental activity.
Lacks validity
A03: Attachment is not based on food
Harlows study suggests contact > food. Oversimplifies and ignores important factors such as comfort.
A03: An alternative explanation
Bowlby’s theory has more strengths. It explains why attachment forms, e.g. protection from harm and thus increases chances of survival.
A03: LT does have some power
Infants do learn through association and reinforcement. Attention and responsiveness may be the prime element. Therefore does have some value.
