Experiments Flashcards
Independent Variable
Variable that changed on purpose, “if” or the hypothesis, is manipulated. Aka cause, stimulus, reason, manipulated variable
Dependent Variable
Variable that responds, “then” of the hypothesis, factor measured. Aka effect, result, responding variable
Constant
All factors are NOT allowed to change
Control Group
Group (standard) to which everything is compared
What are the 4 concepts of an experiment?
Independent, dependent variable, constants/controls, and repeated trials
What do more repeated trials mean?
More valid results
Inquiry
A search for information and explanation of natural phenomena
Method
Observations, logical/testable hypothesis, and repeated trials
Data
Recorded observations and basis of an inquiry. Examples include numbers and qualitative descriptions represented in graphs and statistics
Inductive reasoning
Collecting and analyzing data, making generalizations that can lead to important conclusions based on this logic, and drawn general conclusion can be developed into a hypothesis
Hypothesis
Tentative answer to a well framed question and must lead to predictions that can be tested. Must be testable
Experiment
A scientific test carried out under controlled conditions. Manipulation of one factor in the system in order to see effects that are of change
Deductile reasoning
That flows from general to specific
Can science answer natural and testable questions?
Yes
Experimental Variable
Effects that are measured
