Experiments Flashcards
What is an experiement?
A research method which demonstrates causal relationships.
All experiemtns have an IV and a DV
What is an independent variable?
Is a factor that is directly manipulated by the experimenter in order to observe the effect of this variation on the DV.. There are at least 2 levels of the IV in an experiment
What is a dependent variable?
Is measured by the experiementer to assess the effects of the IV
What is operationalisation?
Varibles must be operationalised i.e. defined in a way that they can easily be tested.
What is a lab experiement?
Experiemtn conducted in a very controlled environment. Ppts go to experimenter
What is a field experiment?
Experiment conducted in more everyday surroundings than a lab- experimenter goes to ppts.
What is the experimental hypothesis?
A hypothesis is a statement about the effect of the IV on the DV.
What is a one tailed hypothesis?
States the direction of the hypothesis, for example one condition is more than another
What is a non directional hypothesis?
Just states there is a difference
What is a null hypothesis?
A statement of no difference.
