Cross cultural research Flashcards
What is cross cultural research?
Cross-cultural studies examine how behaviour and human practises vary across different cultures, providing evidence for cultural variations in behaviour.
Why is cross cultural reseach used to see?
Used to see whether a characteristic is universal (nature) or unique (nurture) to a particular culture
Define imposed etic?
When you impose/assume your culture is applicable to other cultures, ignoring potential differences
Why do we do cross-cultural research?
It gives us a better appreciation of the impact of culture on behaviou
Reduces ethnocentric bias in research, reducing one sided behaviour views
Can sugges more suitable tools for behaviour measuring
What does cross cultural behaviour allow us to establish?
Establish whether a particular childhood behaviour is due to biological/ evolutionary or environmental factors
If found to be not universal, so due to nurture more so, it allows us to know if any interventions need to be put into place for example
What type of bias does cross cultural research reduce?
Reduces ethnocentric bias in research (bring in other cultural views, not one sided)
More valid
What does cross cultural research show us a difference between?
Shows us the difference between cultures for a specific trait that you are investigating
Can suggest more suitable tools to measure behaviour
Why is generalisability good in cross cultural research?
Conducting in different countries ensure better gen of findings/ theories
More applicable to wider world
Why does cross cultural research lack ecological validity?
Research tools may not apply (e.g. strange situation may be too upsetting for babies in other cultures as designed for US kids). Lack ecological validity, more ethnocentrci
What may cross cultural research overlook?
May overlook culutral differences as we are not part of that culture.
Less valid
What type of cultures may not be presented in cross cultural research?
