experiments Flashcards
strengths of lab experiments
P = easy to replicate
E = take place in an artificial environment that is highly controlled and uses a standardised procedure
E = goo because the study can be replicated and the reliability of results can be checked
weakness of laboratory experiments
P = criticised for lacking ecological validity
E = this is because experiments take place in an artificial environment which is highly controlled, often with tasks that are unlike everyday tasks
E = bad because participants are unlikely to show their natural behaviour making it difficult to generalise results
strengths of field experiments
P = praised for having ecological validity
E = because field experiments take place in the participants more natural environment often with a task that resembles an everyday task. = more likely to show natural behaviour
E = good because participants are likely to show their natural behaviour meaning results can be generalised
weakness of field experiments
P = criticised for raising ethical issues
E = because often participants are unaware they are talking part in an experiment
E = this is bad because it is the right of the participant to give informed consent, have the right to withdraw and not be deceived
strengths of natural experiments
P = praised for having high external validity
E = because they involve the study of real-life issues and problems as they happen
E = good because it means the findings are more relevant to real experiences
weaknesses of natural experiments
P = criticised for being hard to replicate
E = this is because the IV has not been directly manipulated by the researcher, it has occurred naturally over time
E = bad because the research cannot be repeated and the reliability of the results cannot be checked
strengths of quasi experiment
P = there is often high control
E = this is because they are often carried out under controlled conditions
E = this is good because replication is possible
weaknesses of quasi experiments
P = participants are not randomly allocated
E = this is because the experimenter has no control over which participants are placed in which condition as the IV is pre-existing
E = this is bad because participant variables may have caused the change int= the DV acting as a confounding variable
lab, field, quasi, natural - IV is manipulated or not?
lab = IV is manipulated
field = IV is manipulated
quasi = IV is no manipulated
natural = IV is not manipulated
lab, field, quasi , natural - cause and effect can be established?
lab = can be
field = can be
quasi = cannot be
natural = cannot be
