Experimental Method Flashcards
What is an IV?
Independent variable - variable that changes
What is a DV?
Dependent variable - variable that is measured
What is a hypothesis?
A testable prediction that is tested in an experiment
What is standardised procedures?
A good way experiment should be replicable meaning anyone can repeat it to see if the results are reliable
What does operationalise mean?
Add more detail to the experiment to make it easier to replicate
What are CV’s?
Confounding variables - variables affecting the DV that affect participants differently e.g how much sleep the participants had
What is an aim?
A general statement of the research’s intention, but does not make a prediction.
What three components must be present in a hypothesis?
Relationship + DV + 2 levels of IV
What is a null hypothesis?
A prediction that there will be no change or difference e.g. There will be no significant difference in …
What is an alternative hypothesis?
States there will be a significant change within the experiment
What is a directional (one tailed) hypothesis?
States the direction of the hypothesis e.g. There will be an increase/ decrease…
What is a non-directional hypothesis?
Stated there will be a change but does not state the direction e.g. There will be a significant difference
When are directional hypothesis used?
When created based on previous research and suggest a particular outcome
When are non-directional hypothesis used?
Used when there are no pre-existing research
