3
Q

What were the issues with post - mortems?

A

Could not study actual brain activity due to the brain being inactive

Q

How does an MRI work?

A

‣ Magnetic field causes hydrogen atoms in the body to move.
‣ Magnet is switched off, the atoms return to their original positions in the body, producing an electromagnetic signal.
‣ Signals detected and produce a cross-sectional, 2D image.

Q

What are advantages of an MRI scan?

A

‣ Does not use harmful radiation - for patients who must undergo scans several times
‣ Scans give more detailed images - due to strong magnetic field
‣ Allow live brains to be investigated
‣ Allows for objective of brain activity

Q

What are disadvantages of an MRI scan?

A

‣ Scans may take a long time
‣ May be uncomfortable for patients
‣ Produces 2D images
‣ Expensive technique, therefor not available to all researchers

Q

How does a PET scan work?

A

‣ Involves injecting radioactive tracer into the body, that is combined with sugar, because the brain uses glucose which can be recorded
‣ Brain contains positrons that move around, which collide with electrons, releases gamma rays
‣ More activity = more positron movement

Q

What are the advantages of a PET scan?

A

‣ Less claustrophobic.
‣ Minor movements do not affect the scan.
‣ Extremely effective in detecting tumours.

Q

What are the disadvantages of a PET scan?

A

‣ Tracer is invasive and not appropriate for everyone.
‣ Not advised for pregnant women.
‣ Still claustrophobic for some.

Q

How does an ECG work?

A

‣ Involves placing electrodes on the scalp.
‣ Electrodes record any electrical impulses within the brain.
‣ Creates a visual display of electrical activity in the brain.
‣ Records activity of large groups of neurons in the brain.

16
Q

What are the advantages of a EEG scan?

A

‣ It is risk free.
‣ It is cheaper.
‣ It is a non invasive procedure.
‣ No harmful radiation.

17
Q

What are the disadvantages of a EEG scan?

A

‣ Unable to scan deeper into the brain.
‣ Electrical activity often detected in several regions of the brain at once.
‣ Poor spatial resolution - how accurate the scan is in locating specific areas of activity.
