What is repeated measures design?
Each participant takes part in every condition under test
What are independent group designs?
Participants are allocated two or more groups representing different experimental conditions
What is matched pairs design?
Pairs of participants are matched in terms of key variables. One member of each pair is placed in the experimental group and other in the control group
What are 2 strengths of independent groups design?
Same people so it’s fair
Counterbalancing
What are 2 strengths of repeated measures design?
Fair because it’s the same person
What are 2 strengths of matched pairs design ?
2 people so more accurate
What are 2 weaknesses of independent groups design?
No control of participant variables
Need twice as many participants which wastes time and money
What are 2 weaknesses of repeated measures?
May react to each test different on purpose due to boredom
Order of the conditions may affect performance
What are 2 weaknesses of matched pairs design?
Time consuming to match up people
Can’t control all participant variables because you can only match in variables known to be relevant
