Experimental Designs Flashcards
Independent g design AO1
Pot take part in one condition only
Each condition has diff group of ppt
How to conduct independent g design AO1
- group of ppt is recruited
- split into equal sized groups
- diff g is allocated each condition
Independent g design STRENGHT AO3
P- no order effect as ppt take part in one condition
E- not get bored tired fatigued or better at task from 1 condition to next
E-unlike repeated measure design where u will take part in all condition nd can have order effect
L-increase internal val
Independent g design limitations AO3
P- individual diff may affect dv as sep groups of ppt in each cond
E- e.g some ppt may have better memory wich not suitable in memory study
E-unlike repeated measure which uses same group of individual in all condition to reduce diff
L- lowering internal val
Repeated measure AO1 experimental design
All ppt take part in all condition of experiment
Repeated measure how to conduct it AO1 experimental design
- ppt complete one condition
- time lapse
- complete other condition
- task should be diff but same difficulty
Repeated measure strength AO3 experimental design
P- individual diff between ppt in each condition are removed
E-e.g IQ as potential confounding v as same ppt in all condition
E- therefore researcher can be sure that any changes in dv is due to iv nd not other variable inc internal val of research unlike igd which uses diff ppt in diff conditions where individual diff could effect dv
Repeated measure limitation AO3 experimental design
P-order eff may occur when ppt take part in more than 1 condition
E-may perform worse due to fatigue or better or better in 2nd condition
E-or there maybe lasting effects from c1 to c2
L- lowering interval val unlike independent measures where ppt take part in one condition so order effect won’t occur
Matched pairs experimental design AO1
Ppt are matched on impo characteristics in study
Matched pairs how to conduct it AO1
Choose a variable to match ppt on
Test the ppt on this variable before the study
Match ppt with the same scores
Randomly allocate each member of the pair to one condition
Matched pairs experimental design strength AO3
P- reduces individual diff between ppt as it matches ppt on variable impo to research e.g age
E- therefore researcher can be sure that any changes in dv is due to iv + not other variables
E-unlike independent measure where sep ppt are in sep conditions
Matched pairs exp design limitation AO3
P-individual diff cannot be fully eliminated
E- psychologist match ppt on variables impo for research but not able to match all v
E-therefore questions the validly of matched pairs unlike RM where each condition will use same ppt individual diff will be eliminated
