Correlations Flashcards
What does a correlation show?
A link between variables
Known as co-variable1 and co-variable2
There is no IV and dv therefore no manipulation of variables by the researcher
What’a a positive correlation?
As one co-variable increases so does the other co variable
What’s a negative correlation?
As one co-variable increases the other co-variable decreases
What’s a zero correlation?
There is no relationship between the co-variables
IMPORTANT
One point on a scattergram represents 2 scores from one ppt so if u are asked how many ppt count the points
Strong correlation?
If all the points are close to the line
Weak correlation?
Points are spread far apart and away from the line
What’s correlation coefficient?
-A results from a correlation statistical test wich tells us how strong/weak correlation is
-range from -1 to +1 the closer to 0 the weaker the correlation
Anything above -0.5/+0.5 is?
Strong correlation
Anything below -0.5/+0.5 is?
Weak correlation
A strength of correlation analysis AO3
-no manipulation of variables appropriate to use when studying sensitive issues that may raise ethical issue or when it would inappropriate to manipulate a situation
-whereas in an experiment it would be impractical and unethical to investigate a cause and effect
Limitation for correlation analysis AO3
-difficult to establish cause nd effect between 2 variables as only relationship is found between 2 variables
-therefore other ev could have been responsible for relationship found
-lowers the interval validity
