experimental design Flashcards
independent group design ?
PT places in separate groups each group does 1 level of the IV. both groups have the same instructions
group 1 - completes task with TV on
group 2 - completes task with TV off
researcher then compares 2 groups
issue of independent design ?
- cannot control effects of PT variables (confounding variables)
- 2 groups therefore needs more PT
how to deal with independent group design problem ?
randomly allocating PT to conditions to distribute PT variables evenly
repeated measures definition ?
all PT receive all levels of IV
each PT does HW task with TV on, week later they do HW with the TV off.
- researcher then compares the results
issue with repeated measures ?
- order could affect performance
- could be bored of task or already know the answers due to having already done it
how to solve issues of repeated measures ?
- use 2 diff tests
- use red herrings
matched pair design ?
2 groups of a different level of the IV however based on the key characteristics of the study
same IQ level for PT A in group 1 and PT A in group 2
- compared by researcher
issues of matched pair design ?
- time consuming to match PT
- cannot control all variables
how to solve the issues of matched pair design ?
- limiting the number of variables you’re matching
- pilot study
