- may continue for an extended period of time

gathered from the variety of sources by using serval methods such as observations and interviews
- data is mainly qualitative rather than quantitive

advantages ?
A
- idiographic approach allows researcher to investigate topic in detail
- sheds light on aspects of human behaviour that would be unethical or impractical to study in other ways

disadvantages ?
A
- not generalisable, as they lack population validity as it cannot be applied to other instances
- data depends a lot on the interpretation of the psychologist meaning there is observer bias
