Experimental Design Flashcards
Independent group design
Different p’s complete each of the conditions of the experiment.
Advantages of independent group design
randomly allocated - avoids researcher bias
No order effect - p’s participate in only one condition - high in internal validity
Disadvantages of independent group design
Participant variable - if more p’s are with a particular characteristic are assigned to one of the group, it can influence the measurement of DV (extraneous variable)
- unrelated data - data cannot be paired with the two conditions
Repeated measures
Same group of p’s complete all the conditions of the experiment
Advantages of repeated group design
-produce related data - data can be paired with 2 of the conditions
- no participant variable - only one group used
Disadvantages of repeated group design
oder effect - p’s become tired and uninterested
high in demand charcteristics
How can you counterbalance the order effect in repeated group design?
using ABBA format - half of the p’s does condition A then B, The other half does B than A
Matched Pairs
Paired p’s complete only one of each of the experiment. P’s complete a test and are paired on same characteristics
Advantages of matched group design
no participant variables - p’s matched on characteristics
no order effect
Disadvantages of matched group design
time consuming
needs twice as many p’s as repeated measures design
