Expansion Slots Flashcards
1
Q
Expansion Slots & Bus Speeds
A
- Communication path
- A city of technology
- Internal PC growth
- Independent pathway
- System expansion
- Additional capabilities
2
Q
The Expansion Bus
A
-“Width” in bits = Width is changing to bandwidth
- Clockspeed of the bus (Expansion gets it own clock)
- 1Mhz = 1 million cycles per second
- 1Ghz = 1000Mhz
- Clockspeed doesn’t necessarily equal transfer rate
- DDR3 SDRAM does 64x memory clockspeed
3
Q
Conventional PCI
Peripheral Component Interconnect
A
- Peripheral component interconnect
- Created in 1994
- Common expansion interface
- 32bit & 64bit
- Parallel communication
- Throughput =
- 133MB/s (32bit @ 33Mhz)
- 266MB/s (32bit @ 66Mhz)
- 533MB/s (64bit @ 66Mhz)
4
Q
PCI - X
Peripheral Component Interface eXtended
A
-Designed for servers
- Higher bandwidth
- Four times the clockspeed
- Built to handle higher speed network & storage
- 1064MB/s throughput
- Parallel communication
5
Q
PCIe
Peripheral Component Interface Express
A
-Replace, PCI, PCI-X, & AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port)
- Communicates serially (Unidirectional lanes)
- Slower devices doesn’t slow everyone
-x1, x2, x4, x8, x16, x32 duplex lanes.
6
Q
PCI Express Throughput
PCIe
A
-Different versions of PCIe
- Per lane throughput each direction
- V1 x = 250MB/s
- V2 x = 500MB/s
- V3.0 = 1GB/s
- V4.0 = 2GB/s
7
Q
Mini PCI & Express Mini Card
A
- Mini PCI & PCI Express for laptops
- Shrunk down for mobile use - Expand features of laptops
- Wifi, Hotspot, Etc
-No access to card
