Expansion: conjunctions of condition Flashcards

1
Q
  • Use IF to introduce a dependent clause with a condition. IF connects the dependent clause to an independent clause.
  • Another way to express a condition is to ask a hypothetical question with WHAT IF.
  • UNLESS describes negative condition. It has the same meaning as if plus a negative statement. For example, in the first sentence below, unless the criminal is rehabilitated has the same meaning as if the criminal isn’t rehabilitated.
  • Use the expression DEPENDS ON WHETHER to express a condition. Use WHETHER OR NOT to say that something will happen, despite one condition or another.
  • Use the phrase IN CASE to express a condition
A

…IF you want to stop burglars, you should install a security alarm.
…She wouldn’t be in prison IF she hadn’t messed up .

…WHAT IF criminals could lower the risk of being apprehended?
…WHAT IF a prisoner lost privileges for that kind of behavior?

…UNLESS the criminal is rehabilitated [ree_rábilitate], the chances of recidivism are high.
…The prisoners won’t put on weight UNLESS they get better food.

…Rehabilitation DEPENDS ON WHETHER the treatment is appropriate .
…WHETHER OR NOT they had a bad childhood, they would have become criminals .

…IN CASE they release him early for good behavior, he should start looking at job ads .
…She sold her condo IN CASE her sentence is extended.
