You can begin a sentence with a PARTICIPLE PHRASE.

This is a good way to ADD EMPHASIS to the INFORMATION in a sentence.

Notice that a COMMA comes AFTER the phrase.

…Seeking to avoid another world war, the European Union was born.
…Frustrated by centuries of war, the Europeans decided to unify.

This provides information about LOCATION or TIME.

Notice again the COMMA AFTER the phrase.
