exotoxins and endotoxins and their roles in pathogenicity Flashcards
1
Q
endotoxins
A
- Live in cell walls of bacteria
- Systemic effects (fever)
- Released during lysis/destruction of bacteria (they go into the blood)
- Causes issues for antibiotics
- Pyrogenic bacteria: bacteria that causes fever
2
Q
exotoxins
A
• Proteins released during bacterial growth
• Enzymes have specific effects on cells
• Include cytotoxins (toxins that are toxic to cells), neurotoxins (effects on neurologic system), pneumotoxins (respiratory effects), enterotoxins (GI effects)
• Highly specialized. Can damage cell membrane and inhibit protein synthesis. Can produce a specific antibody called antitoxins
i.e: tetanus vaccine, diphtheria vaccine
• Produce antitoxins
