Q

Give one advantage and one disadvantage of captive breeding.

A

Advantages-well fed, free from disease, no influence on wild populations e.c.t. disadvantages-lack genetic diversity, lack natural behaviours, lack immunity e.c.t.

16
Q

What are the 4 categories of conditions?

A

Disorders caused by incorrect environment, disorders caused by incorrect nutrition, physical injuries, pathogens/communicable disease.

17
Q

What is the main problem with using a glass enclosure for reptiles?

A

They can’t see the glass and may try to run through it, causing damage to their nose, jaw and snout.

18
Q

What is prolapse and what is it caused by?

A

The intestines are forced out of the cloaca. Happens when the animal is held too tightly. Can be returned but don’t always survive.

19
Q

What are some consequences of having an environment that is too dry for exotic species?

A

Reptiles won’t shed (dysecdysis), lizards can lose toes if old skin is not removed, amphibians desiccate and die, rainforest reptiles will dehydrate.

20
Q

What happens if the temperature for exotics is wrong?

A

Reptiles won’t do anything if they’re too cold, they will be inactive and unable to digest food. They can die from heat exhaustion if too hot.
