Exotics Flashcards
What do CB, CF and WC stand for?
Captive bred, captive farmed and wild caught.
What is the difference between captive bred and captive farmed?
Captive farmed is when animals are bred as a managed population, in their natural habitat so that behaviours are as normal as possible.
What year was the Dangerous wild animals act?
1976.
What does CITES stand for and what is the year?
Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of wild fauna and flora 1973.
What does COTES stand for and what is its year?
Control of Trade in Endangered Species 2018.
What does SSSMZP stand for?
Secretary of States Standards for Modern Zoo Practice.
What are the three reproductive strategies?
Oviparous, viviparous, ovoviviparous.
What are K strategists? Give an example.
Have small numbers of offspring with long gestation, slow growth rate and a high level of parental care. E.g. elephants, apes, whales.
What are R strategists? Give an example.
Have many offspring with short gestation, fast growth rates and a low level of parental care. E.g. rodents, sea turtles, insects.
What is a monotreme?
An egg laying mammal such as the platypus.
Give one advantage and one disadvantage of captive breeding.
Advantages-well fed, free from disease, no influence on wild populations e.c.t. disadvantages-lack genetic diversity, lack natural behaviours, lack immunity e.c.t.
What condition is likely to occur from a lack a UV.
Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD).
In order to reduce humidity in an accommodation you must…?
Increase ventilation.
What is the difference between heliothermic and thigmothermic?
Heliothermic means to gain heat from the sun. Thigmirhermic means to gain heat from a warm object.
Give 3 causes of stress in animals.
Overhandling, lack of hiding places, overcrowding/presence of other animals, change in environment (wild to captivity), loud noises, wrong environment.
What are the 4 categories of conditions?
Disorders caused by incorrect environment, disorders caused by incorrect nutrition, physical injuries, pathogens/communicable disease.
What is the main problem with using a glass enclosure for reptiles?
They can’t see the glass and may try to run through it, causing damage to their nose, jaw and snout.
What is prolapse and what is it caused by?
The intestines are forced out of the cloaca. Happens when the animal is held too tightly. Can be returned but don’t always survive.
What are some consequences of having an environment that is too dry for exotic species?
Reptiles won’t shed (dysecdysis), lizards can lose toes if old skin is not removed, amphibians desiccate and die, rainforest reptiles will dehydrate.
What happens if the temperature for exotics is wrong?
Reptiles won’t do anything if they’re too cold, they will be inactive and unable to digest food. They can die from heat exhaustion if too hot.
