What are the overall responsibilities of OC EXHIBITS?
1) Receive all exhibits
2) Ensure they are labeled/packaged correctly and accompanied by a schedule

2) allow delegation of numbers to staff to use with multiple scenes

What should you do when splitting exhibits
Use a sequential number following the original exhibit number do not use points of slashes.
Who can be appointed an OC Exhibits
A qualified detective or detective constable with experience in
- exhibit handling
- forensic principals
- methods of exhibit recovery
- approved procedures for packaging
- contamination and cross-contamination issues
- using standard approved documentation
Where possible they should not be assigned other duties
What must OC Exhibits ensure before receiving any exhibits
1) Correctly preserved
2) correctly labeled with exhibit number
3) Correctly packaged
4) Accompanied by a scene exhibit schedule
5) Labeled sealed and packaged in accordance with SOP’s
6) Assigned a unique number
What must the chain of custody prove?
1) When they received custody of exhibit and from who.
2) where and how it was secured
3) When/how/why it was moved from one place to another.
4) How it was treated/safeguarded/preserved.
5) when/why it was transferred to another person
What is cross contamination
where forensic evidence is transferred from one source to another source.
