exercising in heat Flashcards
1
Q
describe acclimatization
how long?
what should you do to achieve it?
A
- occurs during first 7 days
- fully after 14 days
- 2-4 hours/day of heat exposure
- first few sessions include 15-20 min of low intensity
2
Q
what is happening physiologically during acclimatization
A
- increase fluid regulatory hormones (aldosterone/vasopressin)
- decrease rectal temp
- decrease HR
- increase sweat rate
3
Q
how is heat acclimatization affected by training status
A
- sweating begins at lower core temp
- produce increased volume of more dilute urine
- plasma volume increases
- increased skin and GI blood flow
4
Q
symptoms of heat exhaustion
A
- weak rapid pulse
- decrease CO
- dizzy/headache
- decrease BP
5
Q
symptoms of heat stroke
A
- absence of sweating/skin dry and hot
- core temp > 105
- hypothal shutdown
6
Q
treatment for heat cramps
A
- salt or electrolyte pill
- dilute electrolyte drinks
7
Q
reason for heat exhaustion
A
- H2O volume depletion
- reduced peripheral blood flow = decreased sweat output
- initiation of hypothlamic regulatory breakdown
8
Q
symptoms of heat exhaustion
A
- weak rapid pulse
- decrease CO
- dizzy/headache
- decrease BP
9
Q
symptoms of heat stroke
A
- absence of sweating/skin dry and hot
- core temp > 105
- hypothal shutdown
