Exercise 4 - Taxiing Flashcards
1
Q
Definitions - Taxi
A
- To maneuver an aircraft on the ground
2
Q
Definitions - Weathervane/Weathercock
A
- Tendency for aircraft to respond to
wind by turning towards it because
of the tail
3
Q
Definitions - Wind Input
A
- Corrective control input made by
pilot to counteract/minimize the
aircraft tendency to weathervane
4
Q
Definitions - Aerodrome
A
- Any area of any surface used for servicing of aircraft
5
Q
Definitions - Airport
A
- Aerodrome with a certificate in place
6
Q
Definitions - Apron
A
- Area where aircraft are parked and serviced
7
Q
Definitions - Taxiway
A
- Path for aircraft to travel between aprons and runways
- named with phonetic alphabet
8
Q
Definitions - Movement Area
A
- Everywhere an aircraft moves under its own power
9
Q
Definitions - Maneuvering Area
A
- Taxiways and Runways, Excludes Aprons
10
Q
Taxiing - How It Works
A
- Apply power to get moving
- Steer with Rudder Pedals
- Push toe pedals to slow or stop
- Heels on the floor to steer
- Heels off the floor to brake
11
Q
Taxiing - Maintaining Centerline
A
- Make sure you know where you’re going
- Keep centreline under right foot when taxiing from left seat
- Make small inputs
- Take it slow
- Keep your head up and be aware of what’s around you
12
Q
Taxiing - Wind Inputs
A
- Basic design of airplane means it will self-orient into moving air
- This is good while flying
- Can be difficult to taxi
- Turn control column into wind for headwinds
- Turn control column away from wind for tailwinds
13
Q
Taxi Safety Considerations - Brake Check
A
- Make sure the brakes work correctly
- Once we start rolling, apply both brakes evenly and make sure the aircraft stops
14
Q
Taxi Safety Considerations - Runway Crossing Check
A
- Make sure nobody is about to land on the runway we’re about to cross
- Look left and right and check for aircraft
- “Clear Left” and “Clear Right” callouts
15
Q
Taxi Safety Considerations - Instrument Check
A
- Verify that flight instruments are behaving correctly
- Make sure instruments respond correctly to turns
