Exercise 25 Flashcards
PESAMER Chlamydomonas
[P] Chlorophyta, Algae
[E] Little green dots
[S] A chloroplast, a starch handling pyrenoid (it’s unicellular)
[A] Soil, lakes, ditches
[M] Flagella
[E] food
[R] Asexually, but also sexually this way:
1) In syngamy, a - and + mating gamete strains fuse (n)
2) Then they fertilize into a zygospore (2n)
3) Then through meiosis, more strains of gametes (n) are made, which reproduce themselves through mitosis.
What are the uc and specimens of Chlorophyta?
Starch storage, chlorophyll b, cellulose cell wall. Chlamydomonas, Spirogyra, Volvox, Cladophora
PESAMER Spirogyra
[P] Chlorophyta, Algae [E] Spirally [S] Filamentous multicellular. [A] Cool fresh water, streams [M] Sure [E] food [R] Sexually through conjugation.
PESAMER Cladophora
[P] Chlorophyta, Algae [E] Branched [S] Filamentous multicellular [A] Not sure [M] Don't think so [E] food [R] Alternation of generations: Gametophyte (n) stage and sporophyte (2n) stage w/ zygote
PESAMER Volvox
[P] Chlorophyta, Algae [E] Buckyballs! [S] Lots of flagella to help it move [A] N/A [M] Yes, flagella [E] N/A [R] Oogamy.
PESAMER Fucus
[P] Phaeophyta, Algae
[E] The conceptacles are round or oblong and have bluish round things at their edges.
[S] Conceptacles, RARE LIMITED EDITION multicellular sex organs. For algae, anyways. Also, the brown pigment is fucoxanthin. They are a source of alginic acid.
[A] Marine
[M] No…
[E] food
[R] Sexual reproduction with antheridia and oogonia. The parent is 2n.
PESAMER Polysiphonia
[P] Rhodophyta, Algae [E] Hairy branches, or up close, purple squidlike tentacles with dark purple bulges in single-file rows. [S] Pigment: Phycobilins [A] Warm marine waters [M] No.... [E] food [R] Not sure
PESAMER diatoms
[P] Bacillariophyta, Algae?
[E] Lots of little different things
[S] Their shells are made of silicon dioxide. These shells live long after the creature and can for diatomaceous earth. They contain xanthophyll for golden brown colors of toastiness
[A] Not sure
[M] Surely
[E] food
[R] Not sure, but it’s fast, apparently….
PESAMER Peridnium
[P] Dinozoa, Algae [E] Looks like a turtle shell [S] Cellulose plates, flagella [A] N/A [M] Yes [E] Can be autotrophic, heterotrophic, or in symbiosis with coral. [R] Not sure
What are the uc and specimens of Dinozoa?
Cellulose plates bizarrely placed, and two flagella that fit in the grooves the plates leave. Ceratium and Peridinium.
PESAMER Ceratium
[P] Dinozoa, Algae [E] Looks like a trident. Freaky [S] Cellulose plates, flagella [A] N/A [M] Yes [E] Can be autotrophic, heterotrophic, or in symbiosis with coral. [R] Not sure
PESAMER Euglena
[P] Euglenida, Algae
[E] They look like skinny things
[S] Flagella, pigment paramylon, eyespot, chloroplasts, vacuoles, etc.
[A] Fresh water usually
[M] Motile, with two flagella
[E] Can be autotrophic, heterotrophic, and saprophytic (processing dead things)
[R] Not sure
