23
Q

Define: Pulmonary ventilation

A

The tidelike movement of air into and out of the lungs so that the gases in the alveoli are continuously changed and refreshed. Also more simply called ventilation, or breathing.

24
Q

Define: External Respiration

A

The gas exchange between the blood and the air-filled chambers of the lungs (oxygen loading and carbon dioxide unloading)

25
Q

Define: Internal Respiration

A

Exchange of gases between systemic blood and tissue cells (oxygen unloading and carbon dioxide loading)

26
Q

Define: Cardiac Notch

A

Concavity on the medial surface of the left lung which accomodates the portion of the heart that lies left of the midline

27
Q

Define: Parietal pleura

A

The outer layer that houses the lungs. It is attached to the thoracic walls and the diaphragm.

28
Q

Define: Visceral pleura

A

The inner layer that houses the lungs. It is the layer that directly covers the lung tissue.

29
Q

Define: Alimentary Canal

A

Also known as the GI tract. It consists of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, and small and large intestines.

30
Q

Define: Digestion

A

Physically and chemically breaking down food into smaller components that become available to the body

31
Q

Define: Absorption

A

Passage of digested products through the epithelial cells into the blood.

32
Q

Define: Accessory digestive organ

A

An organ that aids in the digestion of food but is not part of the GI tract.

33
Q

Define: Bile

A

Digestive fluid secreted by the liver and stored in the gallbladder. It aids in the breakdown of lipids.
