excretory system Flashcards
what are the 4 excretory organs
1- lungs
2- skin
3-anus
4- kidney
what is the main function of the excretory system
process of getting rid of metabolic waste
what is the lungs responsible for
remove carbon dioxide, water and alcohol
what is the skin responsible for
absorb water, salts some urea
what is the anus responsible for
bile pigments, metabolic solid wastes, undigested nutrients (cellulose)
what is the kidney responsible for
nitrogenous wastes from protein metabolic, urea, poisons, water, mineral/salts
5 function of the kidneys
1-filters blood from 25% of the left ventricle
2-removes wastes and excretes them in a concentrated state (urine)
3- involved in water balance
4- regulates acid/base balance in body
5-excrete unwanted chemicals (toxins)
renal artery and function
blood vessel from aorta to kidney/ carries wastes to kidney
renal vein and function
blood vessel from kidney to vena cava/ most wastes removed and blood is returned to the heart
ureters
- lead from kidney to bladder
- thin tubes
- moves urine by peristalsis
urinary bladder
- in pelvic cavity behind the pubic bone
- hollow storage sac
adrenal gland
- on top of kidneys
- hormonal secretion
- endocrine gland
urethra
- conveys urine from urinary bladder to outside body
- in males carries semen & urine
- in females carries only urine
what are the 3 blood vessels of the nephron
1-afferent arteriole
2- glomerulus
3- efferent arteriole
afferent arteriole
arteriole leading to nephron (to bowmons capsule)
