Excretory System Flashcards
Known as the renal system,
produces, stores and eliminates urine, the fluid waste excreted by the kidneys.
Urinary System
How does the Kidney makes Urine?
The kidneys make urine by
filtering wastes and extra
water from blood.
Excretory System
Urinary System
Urine travels from the kidneys through two thin tubes called
ureters and fills the bladder
When the bladder is full, a
person urinates through what excretory organ?
Urethra (to eliminate the waste)
Our body’s filtration system that collects waste products
Kidneys
Muscular tubes that transport urine from each kidney to the bladder
Ureters
A sac that collects and holds urine that comes from the ureters
Urinary Bladder
A narrow passageway where urine passes from the bladder to the outside of the body i.e.
the process of urination.
Urethra
Excretory System – Kidney Functions. Give at least 3 important functions
- Excretion (eliminates waste)
- Regulate blood volume and pressure
- Regulation of the concentration of
solutes in the blood (ion concentration) - Regulation of extracellular fluid pH
- Regulation of red blood cell synthesis
The kidneys are_______?
(Internal Anatomy & Histology)
Highly Vascularize
The kidneys are highly vascular (contain a lot of blood vessels) and are divided into three main regions:
- Renal Cortex
- Renal medulla
- Renal pelvis
middle region which acts as a collecting
chamber.
Renal Medulla
outer region which contains about
1.25 million renal tubules
Renal Cortex
inner region which receives urine
through the major calyces
Renal Pelvis
An outer membrane that surrounds the kidney; it is thin but tough and fibrous
Renal Capsule
basin-like area that collects urine from the nephrons
Renal Pelvis
The extension of the renal pelvis they channel urine from the pyramids to the renal pelvis
Calyx
Contains about one million blood filtering nephrons. Outer Region of the KIdney
Cortex
Filtration units in the kidneys
Nephron
Formed by the collecting ducts, inner part of the kidney
Medullary pyramids
A pair of arteries that branch off of the aorta bringing waste-filled blood into the kidney for filtering.
Renal Arteries
Each minute, the kidneys receives about what percent of the blood pumped by the heart?
20%
Remove the filtered blood from the
kidneys to the inferior vena cava.
Renal Veins
The parts of a nephron are
- Renal corpuscle
- Proximal Convoluted tubule
- Loop of Henle
- Distal Convoluted tubule
After blood enters the nephron, it goes to the
renal corpuscle which consist of
Bowman’s capsule and the glomerulus
A cluster of capillaries that absorb protein from blood traveling through the renal corpuscle.
Glomerulus
The remaining fluid, called capsular urine
Bowman capsule
The space in between the walls of the capsule is
called
Bowman’s Space
How does blood flow through the kidneys?
Nicee
The kidneys filters about how much of blood times a day?
150 quarts
How do the kidney work?
Nice. Way To Go!!!
Returns needed substances to your blood and
removes wastes.
Tubules
filters the blood
Glomerulus
