Excretory System Flashcards
What does the excretory system do?
-removes excess and waste products from the body to maintain homeostasis
What is homeostasis?
-homeostasis is the process of monitoring and regulating variables in the body
Why is excretion important for homeostasis?
-organisms excrete excess water and waste from the body to maintain idle acid and base levels
What are the steps of the excretory system?
-filtration which occurs in the glomerulus
-reabsorption which occurs in the loop of henle and tubules
-and finally secretion, active transport
What is filtration in the excretory system?
-Small, uncharged ions, passively move into bowman’s capsule, out of the blood
- large compartments stay behind
Where does filtration occur?
- Filtration occurs in the glomerulus and bowman’s head
Where does Reabsorption occur?
- Reabsorption occurs in the loop of henle and tubules
What happens in transportation in the excretory system?
-Water and nutrients like glucose are returned from filtrate in nephron, back into the blood
What is the nephron?
-the nephron is a filtering unit in the kidney
Where does the excretory system occur?
-in the nephron which is in the liver
What happens in secretion in the excretory system?
-collecting duct
-active transport moves particles that are too big out of the blood into the urea
What is the effect of diabetes on the kidneys?
-damage to nephron and blood vessels
What happens when dehydrated?
- when dehydrated, pores are used to obtain more water
-hypothalamus is released
