Excretory and Digestive system Flashcards
What is the function of the Digestive System and what organs make it up?
A group of organs that work together to digest food so it can be used by the body. Mouth - Esophagus - Stomach - Small Intestine - Large Intestine - Rectum - Anus.
What is the function of the Excretory System and what three organs make it up?
Helps remove body waste safely. The kidneys act as a filter. Kidneys, Ureters, and the Bladder.
List one example of a physical change that happens during digestion:
Chewing our food into smaller pieces (in the mouth using teeth) - Mechanical Digestion
List one example of a chemical change that happens during digestion:
When the stomach acids and enzymes break down the food - chemical digestion.
The _________________ system breaks down food, and the _______________ system transports nutrients to the body.
Digestive, Circulatory
Where does digestion begin? Given an example of mechanical and chemical digestion.
The Mouth. Chewing - Mechanical, Saliva (Amylase) - Chemical
What is the function of the Kidneys?
To filter out our blood
What do our saliva glands do?
Produce Saliva
What is the process called that pushes food down our esophagus?
Peristalsis (muscle contractions)
What is the role of the large intestine?
Absorb water from the waste
How does the circulatory system and the excretory system work together?
The excretory system filters out the waste from the circulatory system.
What is the role of the small intestine?
Absorb nutrients (Villi)
What is the difference between the rectum and anus?
The rectum stores the stool while the anus is the exit.
How long is the entire process of digestion?
Around 30 to 40 hours
What is the food called after being chewed?
Bolus
What is another word for colon?
Large Intestine
What is bile?
A green and yellow substance that breaks down fat
What does the pancreas do?
Makes enzymes to be released into the small intestine
What is the esophagus?
The long tube connecting the mouth and the stomach.
How many main sections does your digestive system have?
4
What is the purpose of villi?
They increase the surface area for absorbing substances into the blood
a harmful chemical made when the body breaks down protein; the kidneys remove it from the blood.
urea
the group of organs that get rid of cell wastes
Excretory system
a muscular, bag-like organ that stores urine until it leaves the body
Urinary Bladder
a waste gas that is made when our cells make energy; it is removed by the lungs
carbon dixoide
