CCR and Plate Tectonics Flashcards
What is Conduction and an example?
Touching a hot mug and feeling the heat
What is Convection and an example?
Heat transfer through liquid/gas. Warm air rises and Cool air sinks and so on in a cycle. Boiling water.
What is Radiation and an example?
Heat transfer through the sun’s electromagnetic waves. A boulder is heating up due to the sun’s rays.
Tectonic plates are made of which layer?
The lithosphere
The theory of tectonic plates
All the continents were once connected and there was a supercontinent called Pangea. Due to the continental drift due to the tectonic plates the continents separated.
Who is Alfred Wegener
He discovered the theory of Continental Drift but no one believed him they only believed him much later
Tectonic plates float on which layer
Asthenosphere
What type of heat transfer causes the plate to move? Which layer does this occur in?
Convection and The Mantle
The supercontinent was called?
Pangea
A boundary where two plates pull away from each other
Divergent
A boundary where two plates collide
Convergent
A boundary when two plates move past each other horizontally.
Transform
Boundary when two plates collide and denser oceanic pushed under less dense continental crust?
Convergent Subduction
If you were to dig to the center of the Earth in what order would you dig through three major layers.
(Outer to Inner)
Crust - Mantle - Core
What geological feature does Divergent boundaries create?
Oceanic Ridge and Basin Formation
A famous one is Mid-Atlantic Ridge
What geological feature does Convergent boundaries create?
Mountain Ranges, Islands, and Subduction causes Volcanoes and Trenches
Famous one is the Mariana Trench and the Himalayan mountains
What geological feature does Transform boundaries create?
Earthquakes/ Faults
A famous one is The San Andreas Fault
Which is more dense Oceanic crust or Continental crust?
Oceanic is more dense which is why it tends to sink.
what boundaries create Ilands?
Convergent subduction
< >
Oceanic - Oceanic Divergent creates?
Ocean Ridges
Where are divergent boundaries located?
Most divergent boundaries are mostly located at the ocean floor although rift valleys can be located where the continents are separated by plate movement.
What forms when two continental plates collide buckling and thickening?
Mountains
What liquid does transform boundaries not produce, unlike other plate boundaries?
Magama/Lava
Heat always transfers from?
Hot to Cold
What geological event occurs when one continental plate and one oceanic plate collide causing magma to rise to the surface?
Volcanoes
What forms when one oceanic plate subducts under the younger oceanic plate causing the crust to melt?
Islands
