Explain weighing patients and converting into lbs and kgs
Large dogs on a leash are weighed on a floor scale outside of the exam room. You can weigh small patients in the carrier on the scale as well, and remove the animal from the carrier to see the difference in weight much easier.
Kilograms to pounds
Lbs= kg x 2.2
Pounds to kilograms
Kg= lbs / 2.2
Explain how to take TPR of patients (Vital signs)
Respiratory rate
-count the amount of times the patient breathes within a minute
Pulse or Heart rate
-find the femoral artery on the patients hind leg , apply pressure with your index and middle finger, and count the number of times the heart beats in a minute
Temperature
-determines rectally, or via the ear in smaller animals
How can you convert temperature from Fahrenheit to Celsius and vice versa?
Celsius to Fahrenheit
F = 9/5 x C + 32
Fahrenheit to Celsius
C = (F - 32) x 5/9
Explain how to identify emergency and non-emergency incoming patients
Patients who show symptoms such as
- Choking
- Collapse/shock
- Poison ingestion
- Seizure
- Snake bites
- HBC (hit by car)
- Straining to use the bathroom (especially urinary blockage in cats)
