Q

Explain how to properly reconstitute a vaccine

A

Withdraw the entire contents of the diluent vial into a syringe. Insert the needle into the vaccine vial containing the powdered vaccine and inject the diluent into this container. Withdraw the needle and mix the contents well using several gentle, slow rotations. Using the same syringe and needle, insert the needle back into the now-mixed vaccine and withdraw all contents. Label the syringe.

Q

Explain how to properly draw up a vaccine

A

Turn the vaccine vial upside down, and puncture the entrance of the vial with the syringe. Only allow the needle to enter the vial just above the stopper. Withdraw all contents of the vial. Pull the needle out, keeping the needle facing upward. Put the cap back on carefully, place the cap on the counter and slide the needle into the cap, then secure the cap with your other hand to prevent you from poking yourself. Gently tap or flick the side of the syringe, allowing any air inside to bubble to the top. Push the plunger slightly to force the air out of the syringe until a tiny bit of the medication appears at the tip of the needle. Place the filled syringe on the counter next to the patients record.

Q

Describe the proper use of the treatment board

A

Each patient that is in the facility for hospitalization, boarding, surgeries, treatments, blood test, or grooming for that day should be listed on this board. Information should include the patient name (first and last), species (and breed if preferred by the veterinarian), sex (including if they are neutered or intact), weight (in pounds), attending veterinarian, housing location (cage or run number), and expected treatment(s) of the day. Any special comments or instructions are written under the “treatment” portion of the board. As treatments are performed throughout the day, the staff member completing them should place a check mark next to the fulfilled duty along with their initials and the time completed. As patients are discharged, their names are erased off the board.
