Exam 7 - Invertebrates Flashcards
Define bilateral Symmetry and give examples
A divisible bodily symmetry that yields only 2 mirror images when split down a central plane
bi = two, lateral = to the side
Ex: more complex organisms like humans, dogs, cats, birds, worms, etc.
Define radial Symmetry and give examples
A bodily symmetry that when divided can produce many mirror images do its circular form
radial = circular
Ex: less complex organisms like jellyfish, starfish, sea anemone, sea urchin(Sponges don’t have any symmetry)
What are invertebrates?
Animals that lack a backbone or notochord
What are endotherms and give some examples
warm-blooded animals that can maintain their internal body temperature on their own; not dependent upon their enviornment
(Endo = inside, within) therm = temperature
Mammals and Birds: Humans, dogs, whales, eagles, owls, chickens
What are ectotherms and give some examples
cold-blooded animals that rely upon their enviornment for their internal body temperature; cannot self-regulate body temperature
ecto - outside/external, therm - temperature
Reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates = sharks, frogs, clownfish, lizard, snake, alligator, mollusks, arthropods
What is the phylum name for sponges?
Porifera
What is the phylum name for jellyfish, sea anemone, corals?
Cnidarians
What is the phylum name for segemented worms like earthworms?
Annelida
What is the phylum name for sea stars, sea urchins, sea cucumbers?
Echinoderms
What is the phylum name for octupi, clams, nautilus, snails, etc.?
Mollusca (mollusks)
What are gastropods?
mollusks like snails, slugs, crawl on their stomach
Gastro - stomach , pod - foot
what are cephalopods?
mollusks like octopus and squids that have their feet attached to their head
cephalo - head, pod - foot
What are bivalves
Mollusks that have a two-pieced, hinged shell such as clams, oysters, and scallops.
bi - two, valve - folding door
What is an exoskeleton?
A hard, external skeleton found in mollusks and arthropods typically made of a material called “Chitin”
exo - outside,
What phylum are insects, crustaceans, spiders, scorpions, etc.?
Arthropods
Arthro - joint, pod - foot.
Remember, key characteristic of arthropods is** jointed appendages**
What is the simple brain of a worm called?
What is it called?
E 15
ganglion
E 15
What are the 5 characteristics of all invertebrates
A
Eukaryotic, Multicellular, Consumer, Move on their own, and Reproduce sexually
What is Entomology?
B
study of insects.
What is Zoology?
A
study of animals
A
name some crustaceans and where they live mainly
lobster, crabs, and pill bugs. Most of them live in the ocean and freshwater.
think of the guy from spongebob mr crab he is a crustacean
B 10
What are the 3 features of Arthropods?
A
Segmented body, Jointed appendages, and an exoskeleton.
What is metamorphisis ?
metamorphism is a change in body form from embryo to adult
How do Bivalves eat?
A
Filter Feeding
A
Clams, Scallops, and Muscles are in _____________ group
Bivalves
do planarians have radial symmetry?
E
no they have bilateral
what are some examples of mollusks?
B
octopus, clams, snails, slugs, etc.
B
Question: How does an octopus create a smoke screen as a defense mechanism?
Answer: Ink
Snails and slugs are examples of the class…
A
Gastropoda
A
what phylum includes clams, octopus, snails, and slugs
b
mollusca
What is a siphon in octopuses
E 15
A siphon is a muscular tube that water is forced out of for jet propulsion
E 15
If a new type of arthropod is discovered and it has many eyes within an eye, what would we call this type of eyes?
A
Compound Eyes
A
t/f octopi are echinoderms
no they are mollusks
What are some qualites about the Octopus?
(E21) C7 Octopus Protection
They can move quickly, have a siphon, smoke screen, escape without being seen.
what material are the arthopods exoskeleton made of?
b
chitin
How to sponges feed?
group b
They filter feed.
what is sessile
unable to move from place to place
do we have open or closed circulatory systems?
we have closed
what are some examples of invertebrates?
b
ants, jelly fish, earthworms, sponges, etc…
What do sensory Reptors
