Why would we give type II patients insulin?
- Oral antidiabetic medications, diet, and exercise are unable to
control blood glucose levels. - Severe renal or liver disease is present.
- Painful neuropathy is present.
- Undergoing surgery or diagnostic tests.
- Experiencing severe stress (infection and trauma).
- Undergoing emergency treatment of diabetes ketoacidosis
(DKA) and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic nonketotic syndrome. - Requiring treatment of hyperkalemia

How do we avoid renal failure if we are performing a contrast test while taking metformin?
should be held at least 24 hours
before tests and 48 hours after tests with
contrast dye to avoid renal failure
What are adverse effects of metformin?
EAST LIKELY DRUG to cause
hypoglycemia; Lactic acidosis (50% mortality); GI
upset (anorexia, N, D- weight loss); usually
subsides; Vit B12 and Folic acid deficiency
