Exam 3 Week 6 Pregnancy Flashcards
are all women happy to be pregnant?
no, you need to consider that some may be fearful or upset.
exercising during pregnancy can decrease health risks such as
gestational DM, preeclampsia, LBP and low birth weight baby.
does exercise make labor shorter or longer
shorter
what does exercise do to recovery, after delivery
decreases it
what happens to glucose production and insulin secretion
increases 30% in the third trimester.
insulin increases
what happens to circulating blood glucose and why
decreases, 10-20%. because there is more glucose, and more insulin to pick it up, so less in the blood
what are the 3 physiologic reasons why women fatigue so much easier while pregnant
- rescued liver storage of glucose,
- muscle glucose uptake decreases by 40%,
- type IIb fiber concentration are elevated in obese women.
what is the cardiovascular response to exercise
peripheral resistance decreases, resting HR increases 15 bpm HR max decreases HRR reduces increase in blood volume and CO and SV
what percent HRR and what RPE should pregnant women (obese and unaccustomed) exercise around? physically active pregnant women?
35-60%
12-16 RPE
45-60%
13-16 RPE
what are the PAG for health women who are not already highly active
1m50 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity per week (during and after pregnancy)
TF: if a women was active, she should continue her level of activity
true
program design for a pregnant lady :
frequency
3-4x a week
what is the intensity a pregnant women should exercise at
NOT PAST THE HR pre-pregnancy
not moderate
RPE around 12-14 (6-7/10)
RT between 12-15 reps.
what should the exercise duration be
more than 15 minutes, and max 30. 10-15 minute WU and cool down
what are some recommended exercises
walking, stationary bike, swim, yoga, modified pilates, upper body and back, impact (jogging, racquet ball) if they were doing this all before.
what are some exercise precautions (6)
contact sports, increased risk falling hot/humid conditions hot yoga high altitudes aviod supine
what are the (7) reasons to terminate exercise
dizzy/faint bleeding calf pain chest pain painful contractions (6-8+ hours) gush from vagina decreased fetal movement
what are some relative contraindications for exercising while pregnant
anemia, cardia dysrhythmias, bronchitis, T1DM, extremely overweight, sedentary, HTN, orthopedic, seizes, hyperthyroidism, heavy smoker.
what are some absolute contraindications
HD, restricted lung disease, incompetent cervix, at risk pregnancy, 2/3rd term bleeding, placenta prevue, premature labor, ruptured membranes, preeclampsia.
what are (4) common post part findings
weight retention, fatigue, sleep deprivation, and depression
what are the benefits of post parts exercise
reduces fatigue improves mood and mental acuity improves fitness promotes return to pre-pregnancy weight decreases risk of disease mom interaction and social time reduces risk DVT
how soon after delivery can you begin exercise
4-6 weeks after vaginal delivery
8-10 weeks after C-section
what is the PAG for minutes per week
150 moderate
what is the aerobic exercise recommendation
20-30 minutes of walking initially
what is the postpartum strengthening muscles.
abdominals and paraspinals, and major groups. even arms and pelvis floor
why do postpartum women have lower bone density
the lactation will decrease bone density in the L-spine, so we need to do exercises to improve on bone density.
why is strengthening the pelvic floor important
we need this for incontinence, and especially if they want to have another child.
TF: heavy activity may increase lactate levels
true
what will the return to physical activity depend on
prior level of fitness
complications during. pregnancy
mode of delivery
how many liters of water should a pregnant lady have, and how about postpartum
3 L
3.8 L (when lactating)
